William A. Edwards, Architect of Edwards and Sayward
William A. Edwards (1866-1939) was one of the most prolific school architects of his generation, designing educational buildings for Winthrop College, University of Florida, Florida A&M, Agnes Scott College, and the public school system in Atlanta. Moreover, few architects rivaled him for the number of county courthouses he designed in South Carolina, Georgia, and elsewhere. Although few houses by Edwards are known, the range of public and institutional buildings, as well as his professional service in the AIA, mark him as one of the most significant architects of his generation in Atlanta history.
The Architecture of William A. Edwards / Edwards and Sayward continues DeKalb History Center’s periodic free public lectures by architectural historian Robert M. Craig, Professor Emeritus, College of Design, Georgia Tech. Dr. Craig will illustrate works of William A. Edwards from his various partnerships in South Carolina and Georgia, best known of which is the practice of Edwards and Sayward. In addition to school buildings, projects range from the large scale of the Odd Fellows Building in Sweet Auburn to small golf clubhouses in Candler Park and Piedmont Park. Major attention will be given to surveying Edwards’s university and secondary school buildings and courthouses.
