Lithonia Community Engagement Project

In November 2022, we began our Lithonia Community Engagement Project, starting with an interview with Olitha McGuire Reid. She attended Bruce Street school, then became one of the students to integrate Lithonia High. Ms. Reid also went to the March on Washington in 1963. You can read the transcript here, along with others along the way. We’ll be adding more to this page, so stay tuned! These interviews help tell the story of Lithonia and its citizens, through various time periods and from various perspectives. The interviews also help us fill the gaps in our collection, as it relates to Lithonia and its community. Topics include: segregation & integration, church life, school life, quarries, farming, local government, Main Street businesses, Lithonia Country Club and race track, and much more.
