Acquisition and Collection Policy
DeKalb Neighbor Newspapers
(Reference and Periodicals) 43 volumes: Set of bound neighborhood newspapers from various years covering 1974-1991. Clarkston, Tucker, Stone Mountain, Decatur, Dunwoody, and more.
Discovered in the archives of the Marietta Museum of History, these bound newspaper books are now at home in the DeKalb History Center archives. Capturing the early 1970s through 1991, these newspapers feature articles about Clarkston, Tucker, Stone Mountain, Decatur, Chamblee and Dunwoody neighborhoods. Contact the archivist today to set an appointment to see these marvelous books and take a step back in time!
Crossroads Newspaper Collection
(Reference and Periodicals) Publication began in the mid-90s, serving south DeKalb County. Delivered its last paper edition in 2018. The archives holds paper editions from years 2000-2018.
Dunwoody Crier Newspaper Collection
(Reference and Periodicals) Publication began in 1976, serving north DeKalb County. The archives holds paper editions from 1977-1989.
City of Clarkston, Georgia
(Subject Files) We have a large selection of files on the city of Clarkston, including news articles and copies of the Clarkston Clarion newsletter from the 1940s. We are always looking for primary source material (letters, photos, etc.) from citizens of Clarkston.
Knollwood Elementary
(Special Collections) Now called Wadsworth Elementary in Decatur, Knollwood originally opened in 1955. The archives holds the collection of Miss Feemster, who was one of the first teachers at the school. Collection includes a large quantity of photos.
DeKalb County Board of Health
(Special Collections) This collection includes photos, scrapbooks, newsletters, and more.
Acquisition and Collection Policy
Archival Collections
Materials to be retained or accessioned into the organization should be created by, owned by, or pertain directly to a DeKalb County person, organization, business, or institution. Special research needs of the community, organization, and exhibitions will be taken into consideration.
Materials accepted include primary and secondary works such as correspondence, photographs, diaries, journals, legal materials, business materials and organizational records, ephemera, writings, audiovisual materials, maps, scrapbooks, ledgers, official publications and serials, and books.
The size, organization, and physical condition of the materials will be a major consideration in acquisition, because each requires resource commitments.
Due to limitations of space, materials that are already in the collection or otherwise available elsewhere will not be accepted. We do not accept textbooks or newspapers.
With regards to donations of audiovisual materials, consideration will be given as to the availability of technology onsite to access the materials.
