Workshop: Preserving Family and Community History

Moderators: Murray Browne, author of A Father’s Letters: Connecting Past to Present & Tamika Strong, Manager, Reference and Research Division at Auburn Avenue Research Library.

Not only does this workshop provide information and tools, but it puts like-minded individuals together to exchange thoughts and ideas. It is divided into four parts:

Part I.

Introduction of the moderator and the participants. 

Part II.

A look at genealogy-related approaches and databases. Samples of questionnaires that you can use to gather information.

Part III.

Once you have gathered your information what are the possibilities and potential pitfalls of sharing your work in written form as opposed to digital preservation. Topics include: Types of writing services such as Storybook, A Life Untold and Book Logix.  Self-publishing pros, cons, and costs; technologies and tools that can assist the researcher. 

Part IV. 

Closing thoughts on the benefits of doing such a project and samples of what others have done. An opportunity to ask questions and exchange contact information.

Parking Information:

Plenty of parking is available in Downtown Decatur. Options include, street parking and parking garages. The closest is One West Court Square, located next door. Garage has two entrances, Swanton Way and West Ponce De Leon.

DHC Members receive $5 Parking Voucher, good for all day at One West Court Square.
